Designed in 1907 by J H Taylor, five times Open champion, the downland course has stood the test of time. There has been one major revision to the layout in 1911 otherwise it has remained unchanged apart from additional length and some modifications to bunkers. Being set high overlooking the English Channel the view to the east is the start of the Seven Sisters and to the west the Port of Newhaven. Inland there are views across the Downs and to the walking territory of the South Downs way.
The course has one par 5 (555 yards) and seven par 4’s over 400 yards and a total yardage of 6546 (SSS 71) - from the visitors’ tees the yardage is 6234 (SSS 70). The wind is frequently a significant factor - for example, the 9th one day can be a drive and a wedge but the next day will be two full shots to reach the green.
